Web Design Of Information Portals

The internet is all about finding out information on a particular subject. There are many different types of website, some offer a service, some offer a product and some merely offer advice. In this article I write about this third type of site which I refer to as information portals.

I am not sure if you have ever heard of a program that the search engine Google run, which is called Google adsense. Basically people pay to appear on the front pages of results under certain keywords such as web hosting. Their advert then appears under the sponsored listing sections of the search results which can be above or to the right of the natural listings. This advertising program is called Google adwords and has proved to be very popular with advertisers who are attempting to attract more traffic to their site. This is also known as pay per click (ppc) and many of the other major search engines also run similar programs.

Google adsense is a bit different. This is where people who own a website allow Google to include these Google adword adverts on their site. When people who visit the site click on one of the ads, the website owner receives a percentage of the income received. This is paid to the website owner normally on a monthly basis by Google.

One of the problems with this program is that it is taking your visitors away from your site. You may be making some money but these people of course may have bought your product or taken up your service if they had spent longer at and reading your website.

This is where sites which are purely information based and do not offer a service or product can do well with Google adsense. The website owners of these information portals are quite happy for you to click on one of the Google adverts as they do not care if you move onto reading another site.

These information portals are becoming more and more popular with people who are trying to increase their monthly earnings on adsense. People who design this type of site should normally be able to offer their services for a very affordable fee. Typically you should not need to break the bank and I personally know of somebody who only charges 150 plus free hosting for a fifteen page information portal site.

The web designer is able to find the content for these information portals in the many article directories which are now out there.

Advertise Online Auctions

Online auctions are a great way to make some nice extra cash, and even a full time living if you want to work at it. There are more than likely several people who are making money with e bay online auction listings that live next door or down the street from you. Some of those people may even say that e bay online auction has added a substantial income boost to their over all financial out look.

When it comes to online auction sites there is none bigger than e bay online auction. Many people will credit e bay online auction as the main reason they even considered getting an internet connection. You may even be one of the many who has made a nice bit of extra change with this auction services in the past. This article is NOT designed or intended to promote the use of the e bay online auction site, but rather to expose you to the wonderful opportunities that exists in the online auction world including Yahoo online auctions, e bay auctions, and other online auctions sites.
There are other online auction sites besides the famed e bay online auctions site. You should look at several other online auction sites if you plan to make a business out of it. The competition will be much less than e bay for certain products. Yes, the traffic will be much less, but if you have a good product it won’t matter all that much.
The products you can sell on e bay and other auction sites are very diverse. Many people have found a nice niche product that sells very well. There are many sites selling list of wholesale distributors for products, but the experts say it comes thorough trial and error to find the really good ones.

Why? – Page Rank

What is Page Rank ?

In short Page Rank is a “vote”, by all the other pages on the Web, about how important a page is. A link to a page counts as a vote of support. If there’s no link there’s no support (but it’s an abstention from voting rather than a vote against the page).

How is Page Rank Used?

Page Rank is one of the methods Google uses to determine a page’s relevance or importance. It is only one part of the story when it comes to the Google listing, but the other aspects are discussed elsewhere (and are ever changing) and Page Rank is interesting enough to deserve a paper of its own.

Page Rank is also displayed on the toolbar of your browser if you’ve installed the Google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/). But the Toolbar Page Rank only goes from 0 – 10 and seems to be something like a logarithmic scale:

Toolbar Page Rank:

(log base 10) Real Page Rank
0 0 – 10
1 100 – 1,000
2 1,000 – 10,000
3 10,000 – 100,000
4 and so on…

We can’t know the exact details of the scale because, as we’ll see later, the maximum PR of all pages on the web changes every month when Google does its re-indexing! If we presume the scale is logarithmic (although there is only anecdotal evidence for this at the time of writing) then Google could simply give the highest actual PR page a toolbar PR of 10 and scale the rest appropriately.

Also the toolbar sometimes guesses! The toolbar often shows me a Toolbar PR for pages I’ve only just uploaded and cannot possibly be in the index yet!

What seems to be happening is that the toolbar looks at the URL of the page the browser is displaying and strips off everything down the last “/” (i.e. it goes to the “parent” page in URL terms). If Google has a Toolbar PR for that parent then it subtracts 1 and shows that as the Toolbar PR for this page. If there’s no PR for the parent it goes to the parent’s page, but subtracting 2, and so on all the way up to the root of your site. If it can’t find a Toolbar PR to display in this way, that is if it doesn’t find a page with a real calculated PR, then the bar is greyed out.

Note that if the Toolbar is guessing in this way, the Actual PR of the page is 0 – though its PR will be calculated shortly after the Google spider first sees it.

PageRank says nothing about the content or size of a page, the language it’s written in, or the text used in the anchor of a link!

Definitions

I’ve started to use some technical terms and shorthand in this paper. Now’s as good a time as any to define all the terms I’ll use:

PR: Shorthand for PageRank: the actual, real, page rank for each page as calculated by Google. As we’ll see later this can range from 0.15 to billions.

Toolbar PR: The PageRank displayed in the Google toolbar in your browser. This ranges from 0 to 10.

Backlink: If page A links out to page B, then page B is said to have a “backlink” from page A.

On-page Optimization Tricks That Boost Your Webpage Rankings

Although good on-page optimization is something you’ll really want to do, it is not how you make dramatic changes in your search engine ranking! Many believe that by getting your keyword density just right, you’ll really move up in the search engines. That is really a misconception. It is the off-page optimization factors that will get you high rankings.

The first thing you need to do is select a page title for your website. The page title should include only your main keywords. The least amount of words you can place in the title, the more weight Google will give each of the keywords and the higher you will rank. Your title should not contain an unnecessary number of words such as and. Lets say you are selling aquarium products. Our keywords are going to be aquarium supply and reef supply. A perfect title for your webpage would be Aquarium Supply Reef Supply. Replace “and” with a “” character and always combine your keyword when possible to cut down on the total number of words that are in your title. When Google looks at your title it will only see all your keywords. Combining keywords to cut down on the total number of words displayed in the title is a great way to boost the strength of each individual keyword, which will have an immediate impact on your ranking.

“h1″ header tags
Next we’ll add 1 “h1″ header tag and place our most important keyword there. The “h1″ header tag should be as far towards the top of the page as possible. When Google reads a webpage, it views the text from the top left hand side of the page to the bottom right hand side of the page. So, it’s best to place your “h1″ header tag on the top left hand or top/middle portion of your page. You can think of an “h1″ header tag as a title for whatever content you have on your page. For example, the “h1″ header tag of this lesson would be: aquarium supply. These are keywords we should target to begin with. Once we have our list of 3 to 4 keywords, we need to go to Google and check out the competition to see exactly how hard it will be to optimize for the specified keyword.

“h2″ header tags
Next create an “h2″ header tag. This can be thought of as a sub heading for our webpage. You should place your 2nd most important keyword in the “h2″ header tag. The “h2″ tag should be placed somewhere towards the top half of your webpage. A good “h2″ header tag for our example would be: “h2″reef supply”h2″ (Usually it’s best to place your primary keyword in your “h1″ tags and your secondary keyword into the “h2″ tags).

After we’ve done this, you need to actually create the content for your webpage. When writing content, evenly distribute your main keywords throughout the copy, but dont overdo it. Try to mention each keyword in a natural way as you are writing, but be sure to include at least one of your keywords every 1-2 paragraphs, depending on your page size. Make sure to mention your main keyword at the very top left and the very bottom right hand side of your webpage. A good way to do this to is to include this in the copyright information line at the bottom of the website.

Bolding, italicizing and underlining…
Once we’ve finished writing our copy, we should go through and bold, underline, or italicize some of the keywords. Do this no more than once each. If you do more than this, it will hurt you more than it helps.

Properly include “alt” image tags…
Next, click on the very top image of your webpage (This is usually your website’s header graphic) and include an “alt” image tag using the text “aquarium supply header”. Click on 2 more graphics throughout your webpage and enter your other keywords, plus an extra word like “graphic” or “image”… In this example, we would use “reef supply picture graphic”. This helps to ensure that Google won’t view this as spam.

What Is Domain Name Backordering? Watch Out For This One!

Domain names are the hottest net-real-estate on the internet. It’s no wonder services like: “Domain Name Backordering” is available to the public. Can someone really backorder your domain right from underneath you? Guess again…

So what is Domain Name Backordering?

This is a service that allows anybody on the internet to reserve a domain name if and when it goes up for sale! This doesn’t seem harmful does it? Guess again…

Companies all over the internet are ordering this service for website url’s that seem to be popular! What if by chance you just happen to forget to re-order your domain name? Let’s say that you go on vacation and neglect to check your emails that are now telling you to renew your domain name? In this case, another company on the other side of the planet sees the fact that your domain name is soon up for grabs, so they order a backorder on your domain name and simply wait to see what you do with it.

So here you are coming back from a very long vacation and what is this? Someone else now owns your domain name because you simply neglected your duty to keep your net-real-estate up-to-date!

Unless you own a Canadian domain name protected by the CIRA, or you have a trademark on your domain name or business name, you are “really” out of luck. Once you are at this point, it may take months before you can prove to the courts that you simply forgot to renew your website address.

Should This Service Be Allowed?

That is a very interesting question. Some would say yes simply because there are literraly 1000′s of websites that aren’t going to be renewed next month. On the flip side, some of those websites are simply a mistake. I think the point here is; avoid making that mistake and renew your domain name for atleast 5 years.

Google is apparently looking through the “WHOIS Data Base” to see which websites have the staying power online and are serious by registering their domain name for more than 1 year at a time.

website content development

Again, should domain backordering be allowed?

I say no! Just like a patent for an invention, you should have up to 1 year to claim that domain unless you transfer the domain name to another company or individual. This way we would have less domain name theft and less “hick-ups” from companies who simply forget their important responsibility.

Protect Your Net-Real-Estate!

Your website address is the most important commodity you have online. It is as important as your business name itself. It is what ties your company offline to online. People know you through your domain name. Potential clients may end up visiting your website later on, you woudln’t want some other company in your place?

Please be careful when give out the access information for your domain name to anyone that isn’t within your trusted circle.

I hope this article has helped you out!

Bursting Forth From The Sandbox To Top Of The Google’s Rankings

Introduction to Sandbox

For a considerably long period, Google happened to provide new sites with a temporary boost, known as “fresh boost” or new site bonus. But recently this search giant seems to have set a new trend in place for Search Engine Page Rankings (SEPRs). It was found that that Google SERPs of brand new sites turned out to be pretty pathetic after the initial glorious days at the top of the search rankings. This phenomenon is popularly referred to as Google’s Sandbox.

Google’s Sandbox is like a quicksand

Though Sandbox sounds pretty pleasant, it very much resembles a quicksand than a playground as suggested by its name to many web professionals.

When a new website is indexed in Google, it gets propelled to the top of the SERPs charts for a short yet glorious time, and then, slides downhill only to be buried deeply in the sand at Google. In other words, Google’s Sandbox is about a brand new website being placed on probation, or a hiatus or in a moratorium and kept lower than expected in searches, before being given full value for its incoming links and content.

How does it affect the website?

The Google’s Sandbox is said to be a filter placed on new websites to discourage spam sites from rising quickly, getting banned, and repeating the process. Websites in the Sandbox does not receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword phrases. The new website will be there in the result pages, but it does not rank well no matter how much original, well optimized the content is and how many quality inbound links the site does have.

Which sorts of websites are vulnerable to be mired in the Sandbox?

While all types of sites can be placed in the Sandbox barring a few exceptions. The problem appears grave for new websites seeking rankings for highly competitive keyword phrases. More competitive keyword driven Websites seeking rankings in highly competitive searches are likely to be in for a much longer duration.

How long does a site remain buried in the Sandbox?

Hiatus in the Sandbox varies from one to six months, with three to four months being the average stay time frame. It has been observed that less competitive searches are given the much shorter stay, whereas hyper-competitive keywords often get sojourn in the sand for six months. The most frequent time of burial is said to be about three months for most search terms.

What distinguishes sites trapped in sand and a Google’s penalty?

Sandbox is a Google-only event. Many folks while they see good rankings in Yahoo and MSN Search of their sites mistakenly believe that they have triggered a Google penalty. However this is generally not the case in point.

Sites penalized by Google do not appear in the Google search engine results pages for even the less important searches. Moreover, sites which have invited the wrath of Google show no page rank, and have a grey bar on the Google Toolbar. And none is true in case of sites mired in the Sandbox.

Google’s Sandbox: Letting website grow to its natural evolution

Google is looking ahead for Websites that offer quality content. It is an effort to prevent spammers from creating web sites that are just a flash in the pan, and to discourage the violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines which was not an exception in the past, to say the least.

Google’s Sandbox has deliberately been instituted to put a check on the use of throw away spam sites to build early traffic, and to slow down the purchase of expired domain names, among other things.

Google continues to strive that its ranking algorithm, inbound links, original content rich with keywords, and the use of anchor text are not tampered with for a short term gain severely affecting its credibility and quality standards. This stand is driven by the vision of Google that Website should grow gradually to its natural evolution.

Getting grounds before getting grounded in Sandbox

Getting grounded in the Sandbox is almost near-universal for sites. So, it is the best to be prepared for the eventuality. Planning ahead to be buried in the Sandbox may lessen the damage, using the time to your best advantage. To keep the Sandbox filter from causing severe harm to your online, and even your offline business, employ the following strategies:

- The sojourn in the sand may be cut short to a degree by purchasing and sending live a website, before it is ready for prime time.

- Make it sure that you add as many incoming links as possible to get keep on adding content to your site. Do anything but increase your site’s appearance on the Interner

- Purchase and register a domain name and park it. By so doing, some of the sand time will be run through the Google hourglass, before your site is ready for launch. In the meantime, you can be preparing content when your site goes public

- Plan the time of your website launch to have the Sandbox time period passed off when your site needs high search engines rankings the most. Plan for entering the Sandbox by putting your site live at least three months earlier than expected.

Rising from the moratorium: Key strategies that really works!

All your apprehension and concern apart, your stay in the Sandbox is simply an excellent opportunity to improve upon your site, and enrich it the way Google will never ever refute to accept in the top rankings. You can dig in the sand to carve out a niche in your site optimisation.

Here’s how you embark on

- Use the time in the quicksand to add incoming links to your website whilst you are in Sandbox. Better still, if you can employ a link exchange strategy right at this time.

- Reach out to useful directories as good sources of one-way links, additional Page Rank, and potential visitor traffic. Submitting to the various Internet directories, including The Open Directory Project, is quite advantageous in the long term

- Design and develop promotional and marketing strategies for your website to raise and maintain traffic levels during your hibernation in the sand.

- Building a community, or building strong inbound links through partnerships pays better off. If you establish traffic sources outside of search engines, you will see a welcome increase in your traffic levels once you get out of Sandbox.

- When you got trapped in Google’s sand, you may put aside a budget for an Adwords Program, i.e., Google’s pay per click advertising program. This will, of course, help you out in getting exposed and promoted on Google as well as many search and contextual partner sites

- Prefer not to discount traffic from other search engines such as Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and MSN, all of which do not seem to have any type of Sandbox. It may work pretty fine because sites that have well “on the page” search engine optimization do very well in these engines.

What do you need the most while in hiatus? Right Strategy Mix, Time and Patience

The Sandbox is not something you are eventually doomed to. It is not the ringing of death knell for your site either. It is not aimed to hold you back from succeeding.

Time and patience are your best friends while faced with this predicament providing that you execute the right strategy mix. You may not need to pull all the hair out of your head. Adding some powerful incoming links, with strong link anchor text, and adding relevant and rich keyword, and fresh content will help your site rise from the Sandbox, sooner than the later.

What Colour Combination Should I Use In My Website And How It Will Help Your Visitors On The Long Run

To some people, the more colourful it is the merrier it is. However, in a more general definition of a well balanced website appearance, it is not always the case. Words such as nice, wow or beautiful can be very subjective when it comes to evaluating the appearance of a particular website. For some, a colourful, flashy and bright website can be appealing while a darker theme could be better for others. So the main question now is – how do you go about choosing the right colours for your website?

The biggest and most widely practised concept of web colour implementation is the RYB approach. Being the main three colours, Red (R), Yellow (Y) and Blue (B), hence RYB, these 3 colours are known to have a great impact on how web visitors react and interpret messages on your webpages. You’ll realize that most of the links on the web are underlined in a default blue. Error messages are usually in red. Yellow provides a nice light addition which compliments dark backgrounds really well. Orange (red + yellow) texts for example is extremely popular with black backgrounds. Try it and you know why. Take a look at www.microsoft.com for example. It has an excellent application of the primary and secondary colours together with the support of black and white. Apply this technique to your web designs and you’ll improve the overall layout appearance significantly, if not greatly.

Different classification of websites require different approach. In most cases, you don’t want to have a corporate website with a black or any extremely dark background. Apparently a white background seems to signify formality and a certain level of layout cleanliness. Not that a dark background can’t have a clean cut look, it is just a typical mental translation of human observation that the colour white is in fact the cleaner one or simply easier on the eyes. Black background in the other hand, frequently portrays something which is fancy, elegant, playful yet has a reasonable level of seriousness in it.

A majority of designers or rather webpage creators believe the role of emphasization by utilizing light and dark colours. For example, a dark background combined with a light content area, simply attracts visitors to emphasize more in the middle, which happens to be the content area. It simple works too if you have a light coloured background with a dark content area. Alternatively you can add patterns or images into the background to spice things up. Just don’t get these additional items to change the original apperance of your colours. The only issue with background with exceptionally large images is that it might kill some of the attention that you want your visitors to have on your main content.

There’s nothing wrong with having a website with either a light or dark background, provided that it looks good, and of course if it is nicely presented together with a readable content with a friendly user interface. How do you know if it looks good is simply something that can’t be measured by words, but rather by simply looking at it. If you look at it and by some spontaneous self agreement, that you think the colour fits perfectly with everything else, then you’ve hit the big jackpot. If it works otherwise, and you just feel like there’s something wrong, play around with the colours till you have that comforting feeling that you’ve done a great job.

You might be thinking right now, which colour goes with which colour? You can either browse all over the net, looking at websites and noting down good combination of colours as you go or you can simply go to http://www.colormatch.dk. This website is extremely simple and easy to use, yet very powerful in terms of features. Simple and straightforward, you simply choose one dominant colour for your website and it’ll simply chooses for you 6 other colours which compliments your main colour, together with the colour codes. Simple as 1-2-3. Note that colormatch.dk only works in Internet Explorer browsers. Try googling for colormatch and get enhanced and modified versions of the original.

Additionally, always try not to get your website too dark or too bright. You can use either one or both of them at the same time, but not too excessively, and try to find a supporting colour which compliments or enhances your initial choice. Try to balance up usage of colour tones all over your website too. If you think that the upper right of your website is too bright compared to the rest of your page, then either you reduce the brightness to equal the overall layout or simply brighten up the rest of the website, in a controlled manner of course. If you’re adventurous, replicate that bright top right area to the bottom right area, making the right area somewhat a “bright coloured zone”. The key point here is to maintain the balance of your colour usage. You don’t want to drive a car with one of the door being slightly and yet obviously darker or lighter.

Lastly but not least, try to limit the number of colours to a reasonable amount. 2 to 4 are good amount of colours, not counting black and white. Black and white are just simply too important to not to be used. If you really need to use extra colours, try to use a darker or lighter version of your main colours. If your main colour is red, wine red, crimson or even maroon are good alternatives. Even certain tone of brown could actually look like red sometimes. Try to “recolour” your graphics or get some graphics which tally with your overall selection of colours.

Another good concept to follow is to apply a colour scheme according to your logo. If you logo has orange and black for example, try to enhance that colour by applying those same colours as well as the same colours with different tones throughout your whole website. Some designers even select their colours based on the pre selected images they have for their website. Certain images are just tend to be too exceptionally perfect to be omitted, thus explaining such occurrences.

I hope this guide will help you to get your colours right and have a better understanding of what to choose and what not to do in any of your future web design works. Nevertheless, try not to limit your creativity and imagination based solely on this article. Get your ideas flowing and experiment with your ideas constantly. Good luck!

Choosing Your Website Design, A “need To Know” Sketch

You have a company and want to establish an online presence? Then you’ll need to learn what to look for when working on probably the most important aspect, the website design.

When considering a website design there is one rule of thumb that you have to have in mind, simple is better. You don’t want to get you visitors lost with a too complex layout, or with a too complex website design. It’s also very important to understand the market and how you want your company to be perceived. The design of your website will leave an impression to your visitors, make sure it’s the right one.

Your company and website will have to have a logo. As many colors as you wish can be used in the logo design but a maximum of four are recommended to make the printing on business cards easier and inexpensive.

Think if entertaining the website visitors improve the success of your website, by entertaining I mean moving objects or pictures, floating text etc. This decision depends on your audience and on the purpose of the website. There are a lot of tools that can be used on your website, the hard part is choosing the ones that fit with the audience and goal of your website. Flash is one example of a commonly misused tool, while a flash website design or layout might be cool, it might not be best for your website goals.

You’ll have to be careful when choosing the person that will design your website, you might get along a lot of designers that claim to be qualified but with no real experience, you should ask to see some examples of previous work. You should also ask your website designer about the following: possibility to manually write HTML code, if he can work with JavaScript or such languages, create and optimize META-tags for search engines, create forms and other interactive content and if he can work with websites in a secure environment. Your website might not need all these features, but any decent website designer should have these skills. Lacking any of those skills might mean that they are not sufficiently qualified.

If you want a professional looking website design you’ll have to hire a good designer that will work with you on the website from start to finish and will also be available if you’ll need changes or updates to your site in the future.

How To Get Multiple Backlinks From Article Submissions

One of the keys to ranking well in the major search engines Google, Yahoo!, and MSN is having lots of links to your website. But sometimes it’s challenging to get those links while once trading links was the way to do it, today it’s hard to get those links with quality websites. This is partly because there’s not a lot of room on those websites anymore, but it’s also because reciprocal links, the way backlinks used to be arranged, aren’t as attractive to the good sites. You get much more out of a link to a more popular site than they get out of a link from yours.

But if you offer something in exchange, your odds of getting that link go up a lot. The currency of exchange on the Internet is knowledge quality website content. That’s why many webmasters are turning to article submission services to promote their websites.

Using Articles to Get Links

Original articles placed on other websites are a fantastic way to get links back to your site. Not only do original articles showcase your knowledge and skills, they also include something called a “resource box” at the end. This box contains your name with two or three lines of information about you and your business, and a link back to your website formatted in any way you wish.

Services like RCPLinks.com use original articles to place your one-way links. With specialized submission software, they can get your articles, containing your resource box, out to hundreds of websites. Once your article is posted, each of these websites will send out a one-way link to your site from that resource box; even better, the sites your article is placed on have good rankings on Google themselves.

Whatever Happened to Reciprocal Links?

Once upon a time, something like a year or two ago in the fast-moving world of the Internet, reciprocal links in which you agree to link to someone if they link to you were a great way to make your site look popular. But the techs at Google and other search engines figured this out. Their search engines have been cataloguing who links to whom for a while, and it wasn’t hard to figure out which pages linked to one another for no discernable reason except to spam links, and exclude those links.

This makes one-way links incredibly valuable. They’re the primary link type you can be certain will count for you in the search engine races.

Reciprocal Links: Not Dead Yet

Despite the controls the search engines place on reciprocal links to prevent artificial inflation of your site ranking, there is still a place for reciprocal linking.

Sites that link to one another and that have some similarity in content are the ones that search engines still use to add to your rankings. But you can’t do this with an automated submitter, though many online companies would like you to think you can.

Instead, you need to research manually and individually each potential link partner. You’ll need to identify the partner, determine the site’s suitability and compatibility for yours, and contact the webmaster to propose an exchange of links. This is amazingly time-consuming, but over time trading links can help you build your site ranking.

The best way to get your website jump-started in the rankings is through article submission. In the beginning, you need the web equivalent of a nitric oxide boost, not incremental steps. Trading reciprocal links can come later, when you have more time to devote to climbing in the ranks.
